How I do it: Covering live events with the Samsung Galaxy Note

Android Central

One of the perks of this job is getting to travel to (mostly) interesting places and play with shiny new toys as (and sometimes before) they’re announced. But while live events can be a lot of fun, there’s also a huge amount of work involved. There’re press conferences to be liveblogged, videos to be shot, photos to be taken and words to be written, all the while dealing with crowds of sweaty tech journalists and spotty data connections.

As we said in our review, the Samsung Galaxy Note isn’t the phone for everyone -- its size alone makes sure of that. But the device has found a place at the heart of my workflow whenever I’m covering a live event, be it a simple phone launch in London, or the back-to-back mobile armageddon that is MWC in Barcelona, Spain. The Note’s size makes it a capable content creation device, in addition to its media consumption prowess. Head past the break to find learn how I use the Note to keep on top of live events for Android Central.

Tiny N64 controller guaranteed to cause serious crampage

Tiny N64 controller guaranteed to cause serious crampage

On the list of nerd pastimes, miniaturization ranks pretty high. So, we're not exactly surprised to see a tiny N64 controller, but we're kind of amazed that this rather extreme hack managed to avoid detection since January. The itty bitty controller isn't a mod, but an original construction built around a PIC microcontroller. You might notice that the yellow C buttons are absent, instead Kirren (the creator) went with a tiny four way switch, which you'll see above the blue and green A and B buttons. The design skips the L key, but you'll find R and Z on the rear face. For a short clip of it in action head on after the break and, if you want to build one yourself, hit up the source.

Best Buy Connect no longer accepting new activations, service to end June 1st (update: confirmed)

Image

Remember Best Buy Connect? If so, you'll soon have a few more megabytes of humanized DDR3 freed up, as it appears that the retail giant is ready to put the kibosh on its own branded mobile broadband service nearly two years after it was first unveiled. According to the internal memo shown in the above screenshot, new activations are no longer allowed effective immediately, and the service for legacy customers will be cut off on the first of June.

So why the change of heart? Apparently Connect is the victim of a reshuffling of priorities, and the company determined that it "can achieve greater growth by delivering mobile broadband support in ways other than an exclusive Best Buy-branded service." Of course, this is bound to upset more than a handful of folks who have been relying on Connect for their data needs, and the retailer isn't leaving them completely in the dark: to help smooth out the transition, all Early Termination Fees will be waived, and all customers will receive a $125 or $150 gift card via email to curb the cost of moving to a different carrier. WiMAX Connect users, additionally, will also be given the option to switch over to Clear service. We're still awaiting official confirmation from Best Buy -- as of this moment, the official website remains up and running as if it's none the wiser -- but we'll update as soon as we hear more.

Update: Best Buy has now officially confirmed that the service will indeed be shut off on June 1st.

Demi Lovato is ready to give your heart a break on her just-announced summer tour. The Unbroken singer will take her act on the road beginning in June.

The trek will kick off on June 12 in California, before circling around the country for 21 dates with stops in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Boston and one stop in Toronto, Canada. The tour will run through the summer, wrapping up on September 1 in Salem, Oregon.

Lovato hit the road last fall to promote the album. That smaller Stateside tour was featured in her MTV documentary, "Stay Strong." She also recently completed a tour in South America. This time around, Lovato is expected to bring Hot Chelle Rae and Owl City with her.

"Skyscraper" just went platinum, celebrating sales of more than one million since its July release. She recently dropped the album's second single, "Give Your Heart a Break," as well as the music video earlier this month.

While Lovato has been open about her personal struggles, she didn't want this album to be exclusively about them. "I didn't want to come out with this depressing album. I think it's important that I kept a lot of my heart open on the album because I talked about my personal issues," she told MTV News. "But I also had some fun dance songs on there for people to enjoy."
