Gas prices roar to Calif. record: $4.614 per gallon

As Californians' wallets are being hit hard at the gas pump, the national average continues to climb. Diana Alvear reports.

By Jason Kandel and Antonio Castelan, NBCLosAngeles.com

Gas prices hit a new record in California on Saturday: an all-time average high of $4.6140 per gallon.

The news comes as prices are expected to continue to go up in the next couple days, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.

Gas prices have gone up 47 cents in the past week in California. A refinery shortage and a recent power outage at a plant in Torrance were to blame for the recent fuel price spikes.

Prices in California were the highest in the nation, leapfrogging Hawaii's this week. The national average was $3.81 per gallon.

"This is ridiculous," said Edgar Marutyan, a taxi driver. "I don?t know how long we can go like this."

Commuter Darryl Atlas agreed: "Five dollar gas prices -- now 6 -- is very unreasonable."

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County recorded its largest single-day increase on Friday, rising 19.2 cents to $4.539 -- its highest amount since July 12, 2008.

It is 40.3 cents more than a week ago, 36.4 cents higher than a month ago and 71.5 cents greater than at this time last year, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

The record price in?LA County is $4.626, set on June 21, 2008.

The record was set by a fraction of a penny, according to AAA spokesman Michael Green. The previous high was $4.6096 on June 19, 2008.

People line up to purchase gasoline at a Costco Gas Station in Carlsbad, Calif., on Friday.

The Orange County average price also recorded its largest single-day increase Friday, rising 19.5 cents to $4.525, its highest amount since July 9, 2008.

It has also risen by more than 1 cent on each of the past seven days, including 9.4 cents on Thursday and 5.9 cents on Wednesday.

It is 41.4 cents more than one week ago, 37 cents higher than one month ago and 73.8 cents greater than one year ago.

The record price in Orange County is $4.598, set on June 19, 2008.

Jeffrey Spring of the Automobile Club of Southern California said that local refineries were dropping production levels, exporting supply to Mexico and other countries, and allowing inventory to dwindle in anticipation of switching over to production of winter blend gasoline.

He also said that a refinery power outage and a pipeline incident occurred on Monday that sent wholesale markets into a panic about the adequacy of California fuel supplies.

It's not clear how much higher prices will go, he said.

?A lot depends on whether the perceived supply issues are quickly addressed,? Spring said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

In California, the average price of gas is up 36 cents in a week, to $4.49. And on Friday, some stations neared $6 a gallon. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports.

phalanx behan: Grief And Cope WIth The Death And Loss Of A ...

DEATH IS A CERTAINTY
So Is The Bitterness And Grief Associated With It

Learn To Cope With Death And Move On
Heal Your Heart So You Can Live For Them

?

? Let me ask you the following:
  • Have you felt overwhelmed by a loss of a loved one?
  • Did it leave you feeling shocked, confused or even depressed?
  • Are you feeling hurt and in pain?
  • Do you feel powerless against the grief?
  • Do you feel you don't know what to do?
  • Do want to heal and move on from the pain?
?
?

?
You probably answered yes to all of the above questions. If you did know that you're not alone.

Many have gone through or are going through the bitterness and grief resulting from a death in the family or within their tight circle of friends.

Dealing with the loss of a loved one-spouse, child, family member, or close friend-is a reality we all face in life. The grieving process affects all of us-it's just a matter of when. We can't escape this.

Grief Consumes Life

Let me tell you the story of my friend-let's call her Lisa. I had talked with her often and I wanted to share with you her experience after the death of her mother.

It happened a few years ago and according to Lisa she found herself struggling to deal with not only the death of her mother but also the grief of both her father and younger brother.

Being the eldest she had to handle everything-deal with the legalities as well as taking care of the family.

The emotional strain took its toll on Lisa. She became mentally distanced. In her words she had shut herself away along with her grief just so she can deal with the day to day stuff of managing the family that was left behind.

It worked to the extent that she was able to do what she was supposed to do but it never really took care of the problem-the pain and bitterness of the loss of her mother.

Basically every time she forgot herself the pain, the loss and the confusion all came flooding back. And when that happened she shut herself more and more.

Her actions and reactions may be difficult to fathom but hardly surprising.

After all, death, dealing with the loss and grief are probably some of the least discussed, talked about and understood parts of our life.

Grief Can Isolate You

There Is Life After Death - YOURS!!!

Lisa's experiences are by no means singular and is often repeated through different scenarios across the country if not the world. In fact you may know of people who have had the same experience as Lisa if not you.

The thing is her reaction is normal considering what she went through. It's because there is no right or wrong way to grieve for those we have lost.

And since we are all different from one another, death and the grief that comes with it affects each of us in quite different ways.

What this means is that with the proper help anyone can overcome the death of a loved one and recover from the effects of grief and loss.

Why Am I Saying All These Things To You

Because I don't want anyone to be left alone and hurting by yourself in this, there time of need.

I know what it's like. I too have known what it means to lose someone near and dear to you. The pain and anguish is indeed unbearable. It is not something one can take lightly and think one is healed.

It is because of that experience and from the experience of people that I've talked to like Lisa that I resolved to find a better way to live while grieving.

With that determination I did my own research, read as many books and articles I could about grief and what it was that was problematic about the whole process.

I also talked to a lot of people regarding their grieving. I also talked to people from the other side of the spectrum, i.e. the funeral homes and such, so that I could get a clearer picture of the whole thing.

Because of that I was able to get better understanding as to why I felt and acted that way when my Grandmother died, why my parents acted the way they acted, and why Lisa, whom you met above, acted the way she did.

It's from this mindset that I wrote my guide "Healing After Death" because I truly believe that we can all heal ourselves from the pain, bitterness and anguish that comes with the death of a loved one or special close friend.

And To Whom Is This Work For?

It's for those people who don't want to be the victim of grief and loss. It's for those people who don't want to give up on life because you have got to know that after the death there is still life - namely yours.

What I am offering right right here, right now is information and knowledge that can help you understand that what comes after death and loss is grief. Understand that this is a normal human reaction and that even though it may seem difficult at first anyone can get out of it - you can get out of it.

How you heal and when you heal is up to you. It helps when you have something to give you the boost in that department.

This Is Your Path To Healing

There's Nothing More I Would Like Than To Be There With You

To help hold your hand, be a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen and a hand to give you the push in the right direction.

Unfortunately there are just some things we can't overcome - like the geographical distance for example and the fact that there is just one of me.

But if there's a will, there will always be a way and I have found that way with my easy-to-follow guide. "Healing After Death" is the support you need to move on and overcome the bitterness and grief associated with a death.

  • Understand the different stages of grief
  • Understand that there is no time limit to grief - it can be as brief or as long as you make it.
  • Learn how to give comfort to someone else
  • Learn how to explain death and grieving to a child
  • Plan the funeral services
  • Learn what to do after the grieving
  • Doing your own healing journal journey
  • Learning from the life and death and carrying on

Journaling Is One Way To Help Overcome The Grief Of Death

Death is a tragic event and when it happens is always accompanied by a great deal of bitterness and grief. While it is not that easy to overcome the bitterness and grief associated with death, journaling makes process of healing a little bit simpler.

Journaling is a form of writing therapy that uses the act of writing and processing the written word as therapy. The premise is by writing things down it helps to gradually ease the pain.

A benefit of journaling is that the act of writing down one's meaningful thoughts and feelings puts a powerful brake on one's torment of endlessly going over the same troubled thoughts in one's mind and heart.

Be Stronger And Comforting To Others

Get Rid Of More Than Just The Pain
Getting over the grief is never easy but it is doable once you get empowered to put things aside and move on.

Not only will you lose the pain of grief you will also lose other things as well.

Such things as the following:

  1. Sleepless nights because of the grief
  1. Sleepless nights wondering how you can stop the pain.
  1. Sleepless nights thinking about the last thing you said to the person before . . .
  1. Sleepless nights wondering what you could have done different before . . .
  1. Sleepless nights trying to figure out how to explain it to your children
  1. Crying yourself to sleep remembering the person that passed away.
  1. Trying to figure out how to comfort someone if the case allows
  1. Feeling unable to do anything and feeling lethargic.
  1. Being sad and miserable long after . . .
  1. Worrying about the costs of the burial and funeral services
Once you get over the pain of the grief you will feel relieved and liberated so you can start remembering the good times and celebrate the way they live and honor them by the way you live.

Reminisce Their Lives And The Way They Live

Remember Their Passing With Fondness

And the way they lived their life in celebration.

Something you wouldn't be able to do if you get yourself stuck in grief mode for the rest of your life.

Grief and loss are a part of our lives. It is an emotional pain that goes beyond anything you can imagine.

If you're someone who has already experienced the pain of the loss and is with someone grieving then this guide is of great value to you and to them.

With this you will have a greater understanding of the pain and at the same time be better equiped with the tools you need to help those grieving - be it your friend or family or even you in the future.

?
Don?t Lose Out To Grief

Grieve because it's necessary but do not let it bog you down forever.

Why?

Because hanging on to the pain of the loss of a loved one is counter-productive not only to your emotional and physical health and well being but also to your whole life as well.

Once you let the grief take over you'll find it that much more difficult to seek your own happiness and to move on to your own life after them.

They may be dead but you are still here - alive and living. Why spend your life being miserable and in pain when you can live it to the fullest in memory of them.

It's something you should do and it's probably something they would want you to do.

So get a move on and move on.

Lenovo ThinkCentre M92z

The Lenovo ThinkCentre M92z is a very good Windows 7 all-in-one business desktop. It's got quad core power, plenty of system memory, and a responsive two-point touch screen. Unfortunately, Windows 8 is right around the corner with new requirements that the system doesn't quite match.

Design and Features
The M92z is built out of standard black ThinkCentre plastic, and it looks essentially like a monitor with built-in speakers. It's very corporate-looking, matching the Lenovo components and ThinkPads you may have around your office. The system's 23-inch screen has a two-finger touch screen using the more established infrared touch technology, rather than the newer capacitive touch found on newer PCs. This isn't a problem for most business use, as corporate IT departments are unlikely to switch to Windows 8 anytime soon. Touch functionality on Windows 8 is optimized for five to ten point touch screens.

The screen is sunken into the bezel because of the IR sensors, which is less clean looking than the seamless capacitive screens like that of the M92z's consumer cousin, the Lenovo IdeaCentre A720 ($1,449 list, 4 stars) . That said, the touch screen was responsive, and the system's IPS panel was bright and visible from a wide angle. The system came mounted to a height-adjustable, pivoting and tilting monitor stand that tilted far back enough that standing users could comfortably use the system while standing. This is good for kiosk and POS (point of sale) applications like in a retial environment.

The M92z came with a wireless keyboard and mouse, which can be stowed if they're not needed. The keyboard in particular was comfortable to use and the keys felt great to type upon due to their concave, semi-oval shape. The keyboard/mouse combo uses a USB wireless dongle, which fits in one of the system's four USB 2.0 ports on the back panel. Alongside the USB 2.0 ports on the back are an Ethernet port, DisplayPort-in, DisplayPort-out, and a Kensington lock port. DisplayPort-out is useful for connecting a second monitor, while DisplayPort-in can support an additional laptop (provided it has DisplayPort) or desktop. DisplayPort-in can also extend the life of the system, since it can act like a monitor after the rest of the system has been deemed obsolete. We would like to see HDMI-in to support other devices, but since the ThinkCentre line is so business-oriented, the lack of HDMI is not a deal breaker.

Two USB 3.0 ports, audio jacks, plus a SD-based media card slot are on the left side. The system's tray-loading DVD drive is on the right side of the system. The webcam on top of the screen has a physical shutter, so you can be assured the camera is off when you're not using it. That's important for businesses with privacy policies, like government offices. It matches the innovative webcam shutter system we saw on the Lenovo ThinkCentre M71z ($917 direct, 4 stars) .

Like most Lenovo business systems, the M92z comes free of extra icons on the desktop. There are a few programs built into the system's SimpleTap touch-oriented interface, but you have to manually turn that on for the first time. You'll find eBay, Kayak, PayPal, and other services there. It's not ideal, but at least Lenovo made an effort to make some of the services work in the touch interface. It's certainly a better solution than putting a dozen extra icons all over the system.

Performance
Lenovo ThinkCentre M92z The M92z comes with an Intel Core i7-3770S processor, 8GB of memory, a 1TB hard drive, and Intel HD Graphics 4000. The combo is good enough for a 3,872 point score on PCMark 7, a test of the system's day-to-day performance. This is slightly faster than our midrange all in one Editors' Choice, the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C ($1,399 list, 4 stars) (3,512 points) , which has the same processor (but less memory). Both certainly outperform the aging Apple iMac 21.5-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,199 list, 4.5 stars) (2,581 points) . Odd, since Apple is continuing to sell this model even though it is over a year old.

The M92z also did well on our multimedia tests: 1 minute 8 seconds on our Handbrake video test, 2:51 on our Photoshop CS5 test. The CS5 test in particular was fast for all-in-one PCs;p only the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C can match it. Systems like the recently reviewed Toshiba LX835-D3230 ($999 list, 3.5 stars) (1:17 Handbrake, 3:20 CS5) lagged behind the M92z. The 3D performance is as to be expected from an integrated Intel HD system: good for video, but only passable to poor for challenging 3D games like Crysis or Lost Planet 2. The system is fine playing casual games like Angry Birds or MMORPGs like World of Warcraft.

The Lenovo ThinkCentre M92z is a very good all-in-one PC for business. The system we tested came with 8GB of memory and a 1TB hard drive, so it can support even content creation workers like web layout folks and desktop publishing. It's certainly more than a match for the aging Apple iMac 21.5-inch platform and other utilitarian systems like the Toshiba LX835 series. However, its lack of 10-finger touch is likely to be a significant factor in future Windows 8 rollouts, so the system's eventual useful life has to be tempered by that omission. (That said, you can always use a Windows 8 optomized keyboard and mouse, but it's not the same as having a 10-point-touch screen.) It's not terrible: The system is one of the better Windows 7 touch-screen PCs out there. But the lack of 10-finger touch hold it back from unseating systems like the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C, our current midrange all in one Editors' Choice systems.

The buzz: Flying robots may get bee brains

16 hrs.

Flying robots of the future may have the smarts of bees, a level of artificial intelligence with potential applications ranging from search and rescue missions to mechanical pollination of crops.

The first step in the Green Brain project underway at a pair of British universities is to develop accurate computer models of the neural systems that govern honey bee vision and sense of smell.?

Such smarts would, eventually, allow the team to build a flying robot that can sense and act as autonomously as a bee instead of carrying out a set of pre-programmed instructions.

The $1.3 million project is led by James Marshall at the University of Sheffield in collaboration with the University of Sussex.

According to a news release, understanding the brain of the socially complex honey bee is an alternative approach to artificial intelligence research, where other teams have focused on the brains of rats, monkeys and humans.

The bee brain is smaller and more accessible than any vertebrate brain, Marshall explained.?

In addition to building intelligent, autonomous robots, the research may lead to discoveries about what is causing wild honey bee populations around the world to plummet.?

Or, at least, contribute to the development of mechanical pollinators such as the Robobees project at Harvard University.

Southern Ontario Businesses to Benefit from George Brown College's Green Building Centre

By Nick Gilbert

The Honourable Diane Finley, Member of Parliament for Haldimand-Norfolk and Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, made the announcement at the center on behalf of the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).

Besides George Brown College's investment of $6.8 million, FedDev Ontario has contributed $6.6 million towards the center. The college will pool the resources in order to develop a full-scale technology development, applied research and industry service centre that will concentrate on green building construction, also called sustainable building or green construction.

The Green Building Centre will provide a chain of services initiated to provide small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the means they require to speed up the lab-to-market process and these include intellectual property management, product development, business development, third-party validation, venture creation and testing through the Building Science Lab, the International Business Office and the Business Accelerator and Entrepreneurship Centre.

SMEs will gain opportunities through this project test and develop new building products, materials and systems, including smart building automation and building retrofit materials. The improved training programs, offered by the college, will also help more number of job-ready graduates to enter into the market and progress the building section?s adoption of new methods, standards, technologies and approaches. This project will support almost 80 research alliances with industry partners. It will also generate 35 new high-value, full-time jobs.
