Big East surges with 3 ranked, undefeated teams

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) ? Excuse Big East commissioner Mike Aresco if he's feeling a bit giddy this week. When the dust settled after weekend play, he still had three undefeated teams ranked in the AP Top 25.

While nine ranked teams lost, No. 18 Louisville, No. 20 Rutgers and No. 21 Cincinnati boosted their combined record to 14-0 and remained among the 14 undefeated teams in major college football.

The best news for Aresco is that all three are staying put as he continues to rebuild the much-maligned conference.

"Louisville, Cincinnati and Rutgers are some of our core programs, and they have strong football," Aresco said. "What it shows also is that, going forward, we will have even stronger football. It's only going to get better. This is early evidence of it."

Boise State (4-1), currently No. 24, joins the conference next year. That should more than make up for the departure of Pittsburgh and Syracuse after this season as they make the jump to the Atlantic Coast Conference. If only West Virginia ? 5-0 and ranked No. 5 ? hadn't bolted for the Big 12.

"When we bring in the new schools, we're going to have a powerful football conference top to bottom," Aresco said. "It's going to be very competitive, very rugged."

It already is. Just ask Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer, whose Hokies used to play in the Big East.

After Pittsburgh started the season under first-year coach Paul Chryst with a stunning two-touchdown loss to Youngstown State, which plays at Division I's second level, and followed that with a loss at Cincinnati, Pitt upset then-No. 13 Virginia Tech, 35-17, forcing the Hokies into four first-half turnovers.

Tech hasn't been the same since, also losing to Cincinnati and North Carolina. So, for the record, the Hokies, another former league member, are 0-2 vs. the Big East.

"(The Big East is) having a good year, that's for sure," Beamer said. "Cincinnati was for real, and the day we played Pittsburgh ... they were good, so I have nothing but respect for them."

Since 2006, the Big East is 215-89 (70.7 winning percentage) in nonconference play, behind only the SEC (304-70, 81.3 percent) and the Big 12 (259-86, 75.1 percent). And since 1998, the Big East has the best postseason record (43-27) of any Bowl Subdivision conference during the Bowl Championship Series era.

So, why is the conference always an afterthought?

"Because we beat each other up," Louisville offensive guard Jake Smith said. "There aren't too many unbeaten teams that come out of the conference. It's tough. I won't say we'll have the national champion every year, but I think there are really good teams in the Big East."

It's just that nobody seems to notice.

Such is life in a league with no dominant teams, even if players such as Baltimore Ravens tailback Ray Rice (Rutgers) or New England Patriots rookie defensive end Chandler Jones (Syracuse) quickly become household names as pros.

"This conference is really underrated, honestly," Smith said. "There are a lot of really good players that come out of the Big East. You don't have to look far to find great talent.

"It's kind of offensive when you see somebody just bashing the conference that you're in. Last year, when West Virginia was in the conference, they came and blew out Clemson (70-33 in the Orange Bowl), and then they moved to another conference and have become a top-10 team ? and that's the team we beat last year. I think it's the perception nationally. I don't think that's how it should be."

Aresco already knows he won't have three unbeaten teams at season's end, and he's OK with that.

"It's always been a conference that has been able to reinvent itself and get even stronger," Aresco said. "We're doing it now. It's not surprising to me that we've got teams that are in the Top 25. It's nice to have undefeated teams, but they've got to play each other."

Not yet. Which means Aresco still has three good bargaining chips on his side as the league continues negotiations on a new television contract.

"It's great timing," Aresco said. "It sends the signal that I've talked about. We are a strong football conference, we're a valuable football conference, we're going to be valuable to our media partners. Not only is it great timing, but it foreshadows the future."

The drawback to the start, though, has been everyone else. If you take out the three ranked teams, no other league member is over .500. But at least, there are the Cardinals, Scarlet Knights and Bearcats to brag about.

"We really didn't know what was going to happen this year," Smith said. "Cincinnati had questions, Rutgers had some questions, and with us there were some questions of youth. But to have three undefeated teams, it's good to see that competitiveness.

"And I like it."

Aresco does, too.

How To Leverage Social Proof For Piles Of Easy Cash | Content for ...

Author: George W. Hutton | Total views: 77 Comments: 0
Word Count: 738 Date:

Everybody loves money. Most people want to have an easier life. Nine out of ten dentists who tried Ajax toothpaste agree it tastes really good. Since most people believe this, so should you. Humans are hard wired to follow the crowd. After all, we are pack animals.

There isn't much money in zagging when everybody is zigging. Nor is there any evolutionary benefit. All those cavemen dudes who zigged when everybody zagged got eaten by velociraptors. That's why this tendency to follow the crowd is hard wired into our brains.

How can you leverage this? Let me count the ways. Keep reading.

When people come to your site for the first time, they'll make a quick assessment about how much they trust you. This is crucially important if you expect to sell anything to first time visitors. If nobody trusts you, you wouldn't be able to sell water to a starving man in the desert.

On the other hand, with enough trust, you'd be able to sell ice to an Eskimo. During winter. In the middle of a snowstorm. Actually that's not so hard to imagine, since they build those houses out of ice. At least in the cartoons.

Where was I? Oh yea, social proof. If you've got tons of social proof, then that goes a long way in building trust. After all,if so many other people like you, why shouldn't anybody else? A great way to do this is by getting those social sharing buttons. When people pop onto your website, and they see you've already got thousands of Facebook likes and tweets, you're in business.

How do you get those likes? Ah, the old catch twenty-two. You can't get likes unless you've already got likes. One thing that works pretty well is to simply ask people to like you. Just putting a button up there won't do you much good. Put buttons right there in the middle of your post. Say something like this:

"If you like reading this post, then how about liking it? Thanks!" And then put the like button right there.

It might take a while to get started, but once you start getting more and more likes and tweets, you'll start getting more.

Another way to use social proof is to get some testimonials. These are crucial for anybody selling anything. You can sell your product for a discount in exchange for a review. Most marketing departments with million dollar budgets know that if you give somebody a product and ask for an "honest" review, it's generally pretty positive.

If you do the same thing, you'll get the same result. Even if you get reviews of how horrible your product is, nobody says you've got to put it on your site.

Another way to get plenty of social proof is to have plenty of comments. Take your average squeeze page, for example. Most of them don't have any comments. But some savvy marketers have some interesting squeeze pages set up. They've got a video, and the box below for emails.

But under that, they've got hundreds and hundreds of comments. Most of us instinctively realize that for everybody that comments, there's probably ten more people who have signed up. And when we know there's plenty of people that have already given their email address, we are much more likely to join the crowd.

How do you get all the comments? Easy! Just post a link to your new squeeze page on some popular forums related to your niche. Say something like, "Hey, check out this squeeze page I just made! If you like my video, please write a comment." That way, it's a lot more natural.

Even if some people write something like, "Hey dude, this video sucks! I'd never buy anything from you!" It will still work. Remember, you're just trying to give a quick impression to people. Not a lot of people are going to read through all the comments.

When you try any or all of these techniques, you'll find they have a powerful effect on your online trust and authority. And that means you'll make a lot more money. By the way, if you liked this article, like it! Know what I mean?

If you want a powerfully persuasive sales page that will easily convert a large number of visitors, then come on by our sales copy service today, You'll get sales copy that leverages some of the most advanced techniques in covert persuasion ever created.

Rex RyanAP

This morning, Jets owner Woody Johnson made a clear commitment to starting quarterback Mark Sanchez.? Johnson also said quarterback Tim Tebow will be with the team for three years, the balance of his rookie deal.

This afternoon, coach Rex Ryan indirectly but unmistakably disputed Johnson?s account, as to both players.

As to Sanchez, Ryan said the fourth-year starter will remain the starter.? But Ryan wasn?t nearly as clear about the future as Johnson was regarding Sanchez.

?A lot of things can happen,? Ryan said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.? ?And I?m not going to deal with what ifs because . . . I?m telling you right now [that] he?s our starting quarterback this week, barring injury.? And things happen.? I feel really confident in Mark. . . .? I?ve never wavered on him.?

Ryan revisited the issue later in the media session.? ?He?s our starter.? What do you want me to say?? Ryan said.? ?He?s our starter.? He?s our starter this week. He?s our starter.?

The key words seem to be ?this week,? and the reason for Ryan?s reluctance to give an open-ended commitment to Sanchez is obvious.? Even if the team doesn?t plan to bench a guy, sometimes the threat of benching a guy helps get the most out of him.

It?s a tactic that Ryan has used twice in the past two years.? And Ryan admitted to it in his 2011 book, Play Like You Mean It.

?I started giving our backup quarterback, Mark Brunell, more snaps in practice just to let Sanchez know I wasn?t kidding around,? Ryan wrote regarding a rough spot Sanchez hit in 2010.? ?Now, it got Sanchez?s ass going sideways a little bit.? He wasn?t happy at all.? When he was in my office, he was pouting a little about it, but I could give less than two shits about that.?

As to Tebow, Ryan also was less absolute than Johnson regarding the question of whether Tebow will be on the team for three years.

?When we traded for Tim, we understood his contract situation,? Ryan said.? ?We brought him in because we think Tim?s a good football player.? With that being said ? and this goes for any player ? we think the guys will be with us throughout the length of the contract, but if, you know . . . there?s no guarantee there that if there?s , you know, whatever, an opportunity to help your football team. . . .? If we see fit . . . whatever?s in the best interest of our team. . . .? I guess no player is totally guaranteed that they?ll be there.? But clearly he?s a guy that we thought a lot of and that?s why we traded for him.? And still think a lot of.?

Ryan surely can?t think a lot of Johnson making commitments that don?t mesh with the strategic objectives of the football operation, and that?s one of the reasons why some teams insist on having only ?one voice? speak for the franchise.? Since the ?once voice? approach likely isn?t practical in this day and age, the folks who do the talking for a team need to be equipped at all times with comprehensive talking points ? and they need to know how to stick to them.

Commissioner Goodell re-issues bounty discipline

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell upheld the suspensions of Jonathan Vilma and Will Smith on Tuesday for their role in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal and reduced penalties for Scott Fujita and Anthony Hargrove.

Vilma will sit out the entire season and Smith's punishment stands at four games.

Hargrove, a free agent defensive lineman, will face a two-game suspension once he signs with a team. He originally was hit with eight games, but that was reduced to seven with five games already served. Fujita, who plays for Cleveland, will now miss only one game instead of three.

The players were implicated in what the NFL said was a bounty pool run by former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and paid improper cash bonuses for hits that injured opponents. The players have acknowledged a pool but denied they intended to injure anyone.

Only Smith and Fujita have played this season because an appeal panel created by the NFL's labor agreement vacated the original suspensions on technical grounds and informed Goodell that he needed to clarify the reasons for the punishment.

Vilma has been recovering from offseason knee surgery and hopes to return in two weeks when the Saints play at Tampa Bay.

The players can further delay their suspensions by appealing again through their labor contract. They could also ask a federal judge in New Orleans to revisit their earlier request for an injunction blocking the suspensions.

"The quality, specificity and scope of the evidence supporting the findings of conduct detrimental are far greater and more extensive than ordinarily available in such cases," Goodell said in a memorandum to the 32 clubs.

"In my recent meetings with the players and their counsel, the players addressed the allegations and had an opportunity to tell their side of the story," Goodell wrote. "In those meetings, the players confirmed many of the key facts disclosed in our investigation, most particularly that the program offered cash rewards for 'cart-offs,' that players were encouraged to 'crank up the John Deere tractor' and have their opponents carted off the field, and that rewards were offered and paid for plays that resulted in opposing players having to leave the field of play."

China tech giants pose security threat, U.S. panel says

WASHINGTON (AP) ? American companies should avoid sourcing network equipment from China's two leading technology firms because they pose a national security threat to the United States, the House Intelligence Committee warned Monday.

The panel said in a report that U.S. regulators should block mergers and acquisitions in this country by Huawei Technologies Ltd. and ZTE Corp, among the world's leading suppliers of telecommunications gear and mobile phones.

Reflecting U.S. concern over cyber-attacks traced to China, the report also recommends that U.S. government computer systems not include any components from the two firms because that could pose an espionage risk.

"China is known to be the major perpetrator of cyber-espionage, and Huawei and ZTE failed to alleviate serious concerns throughout this important investigation. American businesses should use other vendors," the committee's chairman, Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich, told a news conference. He said the Chinese companies could not be trusted with access to computer networks that support everything from power grids to finance systems.

The recommendations are the result of a yearlong probe, including a congressional hearing last month in which senior Chinese executives of both companies denied posing a security threat and being under Beijing's influence.

Rogers said they are clearly tied to the Chinese government, and that allowing Huawei and ZTE to provide network equipment and services in America risks confidential consumer information and undermines core national security interests. He said the committee was not concerned about the sales of handsets that make up the bulk of their U.S. businesses, but rather network infrastructure where they have made fewer inroads.

William Plummer, vice president for external affairs for Huawei, said his company, a private entity founded by a former Chinese military engineer, was being victimized because of U.S. government concerns about China's government.

"Huawei is Huawei, Huawei is not China," he told reporters. "My company should not be held hostage to someone's political agenda."

Ahead of the report's release, China's foreign ministry said investment by telecommunications companies is mutually beneficial. "We hope the U.S. will do more to benefit the interests of the two countries, not the opposite," spokesman Hong Lei said at a regular briefing in Beijing Monday.

The panel's recommendations, however, will likely hamper Huawei and ZTE's ambitions to expand their businesses in America. Their products are used in scores of countries, including in the West.

The bipartisan report could also become fodder for a presidential campaign in which the candidates have been competing in their readiness to clamp down on Chinese trade violations. Republican Mitt Romney, in particular, has made it a key point to get tougher on China by designating it a currency manipulator and fighting abuses such as intellectual property theft.

Rogers said its release had nothing to do with politics, and was motivated by the need to alert U.S. companies of the risks. The committee's top Democrat, C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, said U.S. companies should proceed with "their eyes wide open." He cited an estimate from the U.S. Cyber Command that more than $300 billion in U.S. trade secrets was stolen last year.

The committee says it received information from industry experts and current and former Huawei employees suggesting that Huawei, in particular, may be violating U.S. laws. The allegations include immigration violations and an alleged "pattern and practice" of Huawei using pirated software in its U.S. facilities.

Rogers said that information of alleged bribery by Huawei to gain a contract in the U.S. would be forwarded Tuesday to the FBI, and he was confident it would lead to an investigation. The committee also planned to forward information on allegations of "beaconing" from Huawei equipment to China ? that is the unauthorized transfer of information from a computer network.

Huawei, founded in 1987 has grown rapidly to become the world's second largest supplier of telecommunications network gear, operating in more than 140 countries. ZTE Corp, which is partly state-owned, is the world's fourth largest mobile phone manufacturer, with 90,000 employees worldwide.

The report says the companies failed to provide responsive answers about their relationships and support by the Chinese government, and detailed information about their operations in the U.S. It says Huawei, in particular, failed to provide thorough information, including on its corporate structure, history, financial arrangements and management.

Plummer said it wasn't clear what Rogers was referring in the allegations of "beaconing." He said Huawei had provided "endless data" to the investigation, which he contended was not objective. He said its recommendations could create "market-distorting trade policy" and risk the tens of thousands of American jobs Huawei helps to support through procurement from U.S.-based suppliers that totaled $6.6 billion last year.

The recommendations "undermine competition, which undermines innovation which drives up the price of your broadband," he said.

ZTE said a Sept. 25 letter to the committee, released Monday, that China's government had never requested access to ZTE's equipment.

"Direct exclusion of one or two identifiable Chinese companies is an obvious unfair trade practice and, as a practical matter, would not provide meaningful security for US telecom infrastructure systems," the letter says.

In justifying its investigation, the committee contended that Chinese intelligence services, as well as private companies and other entities, often recruit those with direct access to corporate networks to steal trade secrets and other sensitive data.

It warned that malicious hardware or software implants in Chinese-manufactured telecommunications components and systems could allow Beijing to shut down or degrade critical national security systems in a time of a crisis.

Huawei denies being financed to undertake research and development for the Chinese military, but the committee says it has received internal Huawei documentation from former employees showing the company provides special network services to an entity alleged to be an elite cyber-warfare unit within the People's Liberation Army.

The intelligence committee recommended that the government's Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or CFIUS, bar mergers and acquisitions by both Huawei and ZTE. A multi-agency regulatory panel chaired by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, CFIUS screens foreign investment proposals for potential national security threats.

Last year, Huawei had to unwind its purchase of a U.S. computer company, 3Leaf Systems, after it failed to win CFIUS approval. Still, Huawei employs 1,700 people in the U.S., and business is expanding. U.S. revenues rose to $1.3 billion in 2011, up from $765 million in 2010.

ZTE has also enjoyed growth in its sale of mobile devices, although in recent months it has faced allegations about banned sales of U.S.-sanctioned computer equipment to Iran. The FBI is probing reports that the company obstructed a U.S. government investigation into the sales.

'RHONY' Reunion: Aviva Drescher Comes Under Fire

Monday marked the first night of the season 5 reunion show for The Real Housewives of New York City (Mondays at 9 p.m. ET, in Bravo). And for veterans LuAnn de Lesseps, Sonja Morgan and Ramona Singer, this wasn't their first rodeo. But for season 5 newcomers Carole Radziwill, Aviva Drescher, and Heather Thomson, it was their first time experiencing the particularly catty nature of this ritualized event. How'd they do? Carole and Heather weathered the storm with relative aplomb. But Aviva? Not so much.

Calories in Wine | Calories in Red Wine | Calories in Bottle of Wine

Close up shot of Mr. Picky Measuring Wine Glass, with its 4, 6, and 8 ounces pour marks.

The Mr. Picky Measuring Wine Glass is a great way to measure how many wine calories you?re consuming. Dots on glass measure 4, 6, and 8 ounces. How many calories are in a glass of wine? It depends on the wine. See accompanying article for more information.

Many of us wine lovers measure our wine for health reasons ? doctors recommend one glass of wine a day for women and two glasses of wine a day for men. And some of us measure our wine to keep track of wine calories. The Mr. Picky Measuring Wine Glass, with its measurement marks of 4, 6, and 8 ounces, is a great tool for counting calories in your wine. But how many calories are in 4, 6, and 8 ounces of wine? Well, it depends on what kind of wine you?re drinking.

Calories in Three Six Ounce Glasses of Red Wine (courtesy of winefolly.com):

  • Cabernet Sauvignon from California ? 175 calories
  • California 16% Zinfandel (Bob Biale) ? 190 calories
  • Australian Shiraz (Mollydooker The Boxer) ? 190 calories

The following article goes into great detail regarding calories in wine.

Article from?winefolly.com

I used to drink a half-bottle to a full bottle of wine every night. Despite this delicious habit, I had to cut down because of the calories in wine. Depending on the wine, one glass of wine can range between 110 ? 300 calories. The range has to do with alcohol content, inherent sweetness of the wine and serving size. The following information will give you some familiar examples of wines and how many calories they have by the glass. I?m not advocating you only drink low calorie wine, but it never hurts to be familiar with the calorie count.

A glass of wine can range from 110?300 calories

determine the calories in wine by what wine is made of

Alcohol is Very High in Calories Per Gram

The highest calorie wines tend have the highest alcohol content. Alcohol has 7 calories per gram versus carbohydrates (sugar) which have 4 calories per gram.?This means some sweet wines have less calories than some dry wines!?Dry wines are commonly considered to range from around 11% alcohol to around 14%. However, a quick check of alcohol percentages of wines at the grocery store shows that many dry wines often exceed 15%.?A standard 6 oz glass of dry wine with 15% alcohol has 175 calories.

Warm regions make higher alcohol wine!

Wines with typically higher alcohol content come from warmer growing regions where higher sugar content in grapes converts to higher alcohol content in wine. Dry wines with typically higher alcohol percentages are Zinfandel, Amarone, Shiraz and Grenache-Syrah-Mouvedre (GSM).

Super high alcohol sweet wines wines like Port, Tawny Port & Banyuls are a double whammy of sugar carb calories plus alcohol calories. To make Port wine, neutral grape spirits are added in order to inoculate (kill) the yeasts and leave sweetness in the wine. Port has 20% ABV and around 100 g/L of residual sugar. A standard 2oz glass of port has 103 calories.

Champagne and Sparkling Wines Have Added Sugar

Champagnes and sparkling wines?have added sugar and alcohol. The added amount is called ?le dosage? and it?s added during the champagne making process. The dosage can range from nothing (aka ?Brut Nature? or ?Brut Zero?) to sweet (aka ?Doux?) with up to 50 g/L of sugar. The laws on the Champagne region require the wines to be no more than 12.5% alcohol, however non-Champagne bubbly ranges from very light at around 9% alcohol to high at 15%. For a standard 5 oz pour, Champagne ranges from 124 calories (Brut Zero) to 175 calories (Doux).

Wine Calories Comparison Chart

Here is an awesome visual guide to everything above:

Compare the calories in champagne

Red Wine Calories vs Egg McMuffin
Napa Cabernet Sauvignon vs. 1/3 of a Egg McMuffin Sausage Sandwich

Calories in two 3 ounce glasses of tawny port is only 300 calories
two-to-three servings of tawny port vs. two small scoops of chocolate ice cream.

Wine Calories from Least to Most (6 oz pours)

  • German Spatlese Riesling (Dr. Hermann ?H? 2009) ? 110 calories, bottle 495 calories
  • Slightly Sweet Lambrusco (Lini 910) ? 140 calories, bottle 630 calories
  • Cabernet Sauvignon from France ? 160 calories, bottle 720 calories
  • German Auclese Riesling ? 160 calories, bottle 720 calories
  • Cabernet Sauvignon from California ? 175 calories, bottle 788 calories
  • California 16% Zinfandel (Bob Biale) ? 190 calories, bottle 855 calories
  • Australian Shiraz (Mollydooker The Boxer) ? 190 calories, bottle 855 calories
  • Chateau Y?quem ? 270 calories, bottle 1215 calories (this isn?t really fair, because the serving size should only be 2oz which is 90 calories)
  • Ruby Port ? 310 calories, bottle 1395 calories (not fair, should only be 2oz which is 103 calories)
  • Tawny Port ? 320 calories, bottle 1440 calories (again not fair, should only be 2oz which is 106 calories)
Calories in Wine Come From Carbs and Alcohol

Wine is made of mostly water, alcohol, carbohydrates and trace minerals(1). The carbohydrates come from residual sugar left in wine. Dry wines have less than 3 grams/Liter and sweet wines typically range from 20-150 g/L (some can have up to 300 g/L!). A late harvest dessert wine may have about 150 g/L of sugar compared to Coca-Cola at 111 g/L and Maple Syrup at 700 g/L(2). To determine the total calories in a wine add the calories of alcohol with the calories of carbs.

calculating calories is fun with basic math!

Conclusion From a Wine Geek

Sweet wines like riesling and lambrusco actually have less calories per glass than most cabernet sauvignon. However you may be enticed to drink more because they are also lighter in alcohol!

Even though a late harvest dessert wine like Chateau Y?quem has much more residual sugar than a can of Coca-Cola, you?re not likely to drink as much because the serving size is about six times less.

If you?re on a diet, don?t despair with just one glass of wine. You can skip dessert and use the same amount of calories for 2-3 servings of dessert wine. Oh? and? I?m not your doctor, so check with him/her first if you have serious health issues. Yep!
