Thousands Of Chinese Students "Forced To Work On New iPhone 5," Chinese Media Reports

Thousands of students from the eastern Chinese city of Huai?an are being? ?forced to work on the new iPhone 5,? according to a report in the government-published Shanghai Daily, citing online posts.

A main Apple supplier, Foxconn Technology of Taiwan, hired 200 students from Huaiyin Institution of Technology and was paying the students $244 per month for working six days a week, the report said. The students had to?make payments for their?food and housing, it noted.

Students from at least five other colleges said they ?were being forced to work for 12 hours a day? after Foxconn couldn?t find sufficient workers, the article said.? Students from the departments of law, English and management fromthe Jiangsu Institute of Finance and Economy were?said to be?working for Foxconn.??? One online writer said authorities had ordered the schools to send students to assist Foxconn but the factory didn?t inform their parents or sign agreements with the students.

Foxconn has a controversial labor history, including a spate of worker suicides in China.

iPhone 5 is due to launch on Sept. 12.
