Beth Hooshidar is in the business of sloppy kisses and snuggle zones, silliness and soccer balls. As the owner of Little Rascalz Soccer, she has brought soccer to the younger set (children ages 18 months to 5 years old) throughout San Diego for the last seven years.

?Pre-schoolers are a different breed, they?re peculiar little folk, very unique and special,? said Hooshidar, describing her playful work of laughing, herding kids that don?t exactly pay attention all the time, playing games and laughing some more. ?This beats working for a living. I still pinch myself every day.?

Classes are held from Carlsbad to Coronado, including at Carmel Grove Park, Carmel Knolls Park, the Ocean Air Recreation Center and Carmel Valley Recreation Center.

Hooshidar, aka ?Coach Bethy,? and her husband Siamak, known to the Rascalz Soccer kids as ?Coach Smacky,? founded Little Rascalz together, trying to make a dream come true. Hooshidar, who was a pre-school teacher in her native England, had come across the pond to the San Francisco area to work as a nanny.

While living in San Francisco, she saw a program attempting to teach soccer to pre-school children and just knew they were taking the wrong approach.

?I thought, this is something we could do in a different style so I Googled the most affable climate in the U.S. and this is where we came up with,? Hooshidar said.

They packed all their belongings in a U-Haul and came down south, ?so broke it was untrue,? begged for permits and fields, and started their first class at Kate Sessions Park with six children.

?We have 4,000 children every year now,? Hooshidar said. ?Talk about the American dream, I mean really, big time?I never in my wildest dreams of thought we?d get to this point.?

Their business has grown every year, even during a recession and Hooshidar believes it?s because their product is unique and has a high quality people can recognize.

?It?s just resonated with people, especially in [this area],? she said. ?Carmel Valley is a quarter of our entire business. We have four locations here in this teeny, tiny area.?

Little Rascalz classes hope to instill a passion for the game in a play-based environment ? balls become dinosaur eggs or sparkly jewels and the children have to get them to their nest or princess castle, respectively. They learn fundamentals and the kids are constantly in motion, everyone participating in the game at the same time, not waiting their turn.

?It?s action-packed and it has to be,? Hooshidar said, comparing her coaches running around to the cartoon of Bugs Bunny playing all the positions in a baseball game.

While Little Rascalz runs all year long, spring is always a very busy season. Classes are offered in an eight-week sessions for Mommy (or Daddy) & Me (18 months to 2 1/2 years old), a regular class that is suitable for the majority of children, a veterans class (ages 4-6) and an advanced class (5-6ish). They also offer summer camps and birthday parties.

Lawrence D. Elliott: Trayvon Martin: Not a Symbol for Vigilante Justice

It's been over four hundred years since the first African slaves landed on the shores of what is now North America. Together, they walked into what would eventually be generations of slavery.

Today, African Americans are still connected by chains. They're not made of iron, as our ancestors wore. They're stronger. Their strength comes from another's experience with someone who looked like me, yet wasn't.

I realized this at an early age. It can be frustrating, sometimes amusing, but often dangerous. I've walked into stores and could immediately feel scrutinizing eyes upon me.

I've entered elevators where white women have clutched their purses tightly to their bodies.

One evening, a friend and I were stopped by police in El Cajon, Calif., for purse snatching. It appeared we fit the description of the suspects perfectly: two black males, "one taller that the other."

As a 16-year-old, I dashed out of a store with a bag of candy. I was stopped at gunpoint by two police officers in San Diego. It didn't matter that no one had been robbed. Black boys aren't supposed to run out of stores. For many, it's an instant sign a crime was committed.

By now we've all heard the story of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old black boy shot in Sanford, Fla. This kid was scrutinized for walking through a gated community by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch "captain". He was targeted because he looked like others who had committed crimes before. And to learn that this young boy lost his life made me ill. I know the facts are still coming in and we need to learn more, but what I do know makes me angry.

And I'm not the only one. Not only did the family fight for justice for their son, but many people of all cultures, races, and political affiliations have voiced their outrage, too. After the Sanford Police Department did a quickie investigation and covered it in secrecy, the attention was kept on the case. Now, Federal and State of Florida investigators have taken over.

And social media was a strong ally as people launched protests, signed online petitions, and spread the word about this horrible event. In short, people got involved and made things happen.

Even President Obama commented on the tragedy with his usual calm demeanor.

"If I had a son," he said, "he'd look like Trayvon."

But not everyone wants to act right. The so-called New Black Panther Party has taken upon itself to offer a $10,000 reward for the "capture" of George Zimmerman. The leader, known as Minister Mikhail Muhammad, spoke with CNN's Anderson Cooper on his AC360 program.

"We can make a citizen's arrest when the U. S. Government won't do they job," he said. "According to the constitution, we have that right."

When Mr. Cooper challenged his knowledge of the constitution, he went on a wild racial rant. It was unbelievable. I'd never even heard of this group before, but this guy professes to speak for all black people, including the family of Trayvon Martin. Well, they don't speak for me and Trayvon Martin's family has denounced their reward offer.

In my opinion, the word "reward" is misleading. This is nothing more than vigilante justice. And, as we have seen in history, anytime overzealous citizens recklessly take the law into their own hands, it has led to deadly results. So, it's not really a reward, It a bounty. In my opinion, this group knows exactly what it's doing.

I'd like to make a plea to anyone who feels the immediate gratification of earning quick cash from committing such an act would be... well... rewarding. It won't, so please don't. This is especially to those who are black like me. Whatever you do, it will reflect on your entire community. Writing this is sad, but true nonetheless.

This is not to say George Zimmerman has earned my sympathy. He hasn't. There is something more important than him. If the only justice Trayvon Martin's family can receive is the street kind, then the image of justice in America will have been greatly tarnished. Justice in our country is supposed to be delivered at the end of a legal trial from a jury of one's peers, not at the end of a vigilante's gun.

I know I haven't lost a son, so this is easy for me to say. Nevertheless, we all need to have patience and let the law enforcement agencies complete their investigation. It doesn't mean that the world should take their eyes off of them. On the contrary, the authorities need to be reminded that this time they're being watched. But let them deliver the real justice Trayvon Martin and his family so richly deserve.

Because what someone does today will reflect on all of us tomorrow.

North Sea gas leak exclusion zone

The BBC understands workers were told 'this is not a drill', before being evacuated

Exclusion zones have been put in place around the Elgin platform in the North Sea, which has been suffering a serious gas leak since Sunday.

Coastguards said shipping was being ordered to keep at least two miles away and there was a three-mile exclusion zone for aircraft.

A cloud of gas was reported to be surrounding the platform, which is located 150 miles (240km) off Aberdeen.

Workers from a second platform and drilling rig have been removed.

Shell has moved 120 non-essential staff from the Shearwater platform and Hans Deul drilling rig, about four miles from the Elgin, because of the drifting gas.

The oil giant said the move was a "precautionary measure".

Emergency plan

Total, which operates the Elgin platform, said the situation was stable but it had not yet been able to identify the source of the leak.

A sheen of between two and 23 tonnes of gas condensate, and measuring six nautical miles in length, has been reported on the water nearby, and Total has activated its Oil Pollution Emergency Plan.

Jake Molloy, of the RMT union which represents offshore workers, said many had been watching the Old Firm game between Rangers and Celtic when the alarm was raised on Sunday afternoon.

He said: "Just as it finished a PA announcement went out to say everyone was to go to the muster point and this was not a drill.

"The stand-by vessel had identified the sea boiling, as it were, below the installation - suggesting there was gas coming up there and there was some kind of vapour cloud sitting on the surface of the sea."

I am guessing they are going to tackle it from beneath the surface to start with?

End Quote Dr Simon Boxall Oceanographer

David Hainsworth, health, safety and environment manager for Total E&P UK, told BBC Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programmme the situation was "stable" and there had been no major change overnight.

He said: "We've been monitoring overnight. There seems to be no evolution in the rate of gas release.

"The area was over-flown twice yesterday by spotter planes to look at the sheen on the sea - that is about the same, at six nautical miles in length."

Mr Hainsworth said all the power was turned off when the platform was evacuated to minimise the risk of igniting an explosion.

He added: "Clearly there is a risk of ignition and a fire.

"We've taken away all the usual sources of ignition such as electrical power but yes there is a possibility.

"We believe it is low but you never say never."

Mr Hainsworth said they were evaluating the options for dealing with the leak.

Options include drilling a relief well - a process which could take many weeks.

Another possibility could be to carry out a "dynamic kill" - pumping heavy mud into the well to suppress the flow of gas.

Mr Hainsworth said there was a possibility that the leak could stop of its own accord.

He said: "I would say the best case scenario is that the gas is not very productive from this area and that it dies off over the coming days and weeks."

Very flammable

Dr Simon Boxall, an oceanographer at Southampton University, told BBC Scotland that this was not a deepwater drilling rig and platform but it was unusual in that they were drilling down 5km (3.1 miles) into the sea bed.

He said: "It is a very deep well. The gas they are bringing up is what we call sour gas.

"That gas has a high proportion of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide and that makes it very flammable and quite poisonous.

"So the big problem they have got is dealing with a very combustible gas - unlike Deepwater Horizon where we were dealing with crude oil which ironically is very difficult to light sometimes."

Further complications

Dr Boxall said it would be tricky to get close to the leak.

"I am guessing they are going to tackle it from beneath the surface to start with," he said.

"On the one hand the Total spokesman said there was no gas bubbling through the sea and yet the observer talked about the sea boiling.

"It seems unusual that it is not bubbling through the sea and that is going to add further complications of hydrogen sulfide going into the water - certainly causing widespread poisoning in the vicinity of the rig."

Dr Boxall said it was a very focused and localised issue but one which would be very difficult to tackle.

All 238 workers were removed from the Elgin installation and the nearby Rowan Viking drilling rig by helicopter on Sunday.

Shell confirmed on Monday evening it was flying non-essential personnel back to Aberdeen from its Shearwater platform and the nearby Hans Deul drilling rig.

The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has been monitoring the situation and said there was no indication of a risk of significant pollution to the environment.

Cisco Goes Deep and Wide with Unified Communications | Blogs ...

Cisco today is expanding the reach of its TelePresence unified communications platform beyond the PC while simultaneously taking the quality of the overall experience up a few notches.

At the Enterprise Connect conference today, Cisco unveiled new Jabber client software for the Apple iPad, which makes the Cisco high-definition Telepresence platform available to Apple iPad users over low-bandwidth networks.

According to David Hsieh, Cisco vice president of marketing for emerging technologies, this new client software continues to take TelePresence beyond traditional Windows PCs to embrace a range of devices that are increasingly defining a new post-PC era of computing.

?

At the same time, Cisco says the quality of the TelePresence experience is going to significantly improve with the introduction of a TX9000 series of video conferencing systems for rooms; it is not only much easier to set up, but also is much more immersive, while consuming about 20 percent less network bandwidth than the previous generation of Cisco systems.

Hsieh says the TX9000 significantly reduces the total cost of deploying telepresence, while at the same time making the Cisco unified communications platform more accessible.

High-definition video has comes a long way since Cisco launched TelePresence in 2006. But some six years later, the technology as whole is not as ubiquitous as some thought it might have been by 2012, especially when you consider the gains in productivity and savings in travel costs enabled by high-definition video conferencing.

Obviously, reducing the cost of deploying a room-sized system coupled with more efficient usage of network bandwidth are two steps in the right direction. But it will be interesting to see as the economy steadily recovers whether high-definition video conferencing starts to move up the list of IT priorities, or whether organizations will opt for more application-centric approaches to videoconferencing or simply decide that less immersive free services such as Skype are going to continue to be good enough for now.

Open Laboratory 2013 - submissions so far

It is now expected by the science blogosphere that I post the full updated listing of all the submissions every Monday morning. This serves as a reminder for bloggers to submit their (and other people?s) posts, and to some extent prevents duplicate entries. But most importantly, it presents a growing listing of some of the most exciting work on science blogs. This is a weekly post where bloggers can discover each other and discover blogs they were not previously aware of. Thus it is also a promotion for all the bloggers involved.

The submission form for the 2013 edition of Open Lab is now open. Any blog post written since October 1, 2011 is eligible for submission. We will close the form on October 1st, 2012.

We accept essays, stories, poetry, cartoons/comics, and original art.

Once you are done submitting your own posts, you can start looking at the others?, including on aggregators like ScienceSeeker.org, Scienceblogging.org and Researchblogging.org.

You can buy the last five annual collections here. You can read Prefaces and Introductions to older editions here.

Help us spread the word by displaying these badges (designed by Doctor Zen):

Infective Ink ? March 19th 2012: Horrible Wedding Proposals Victor's ...

Professor Victor Long, pensive index finger on goatee, remarked, ?Far too many marriages end in divorce, and that?s a national tragedy.?

With these gloomy words, he availed himself of a slither of Manchego. At the Sociology Department?s Christmas Party, pickings were slim.

?Well, since Victor and I aren?t married, we don?t have to worry about that particular tragedy, do we?? said his long-time partner, Professor Gail Johnson, rather cheerfully.

Another sociology professor, taller than Victor Long and far more dashing, eyed pretty Gail appreciatively. ?If you?re not married, the two of you can?t technically commit adultery or can you??

?It would be labeled infidelity and I guess it would not qualify as a tragedy,? Gail replied with her gift for clarity, and a bit of coyness besides.

This innocuous exchange alerted Professor Victor Long to the practicality, as opposed to the virtue, of marriage. Another man might have proposed then and there. But Victor felt that a proposal must have, as it were, a certain dramatic flourish.

And so, on Valentine?s Day, he donned an ascot and escorted Gail to a dimly-lit eatery. Champagne and caviar had been ordered for, as he put it, ?this very special night.?

?This is lovely,? said Gail, munching away. ?I?m starved. I think the whole-grain bread?s fantastic here.?

?Tonight is not merely about whole-grain breads.? Victor blinked several times at his manly declamation

?No, the steak?s exceptional too ? the aging process makes the difference.? Gail examined the menu like an epicurean scholar. ?Ah, wild halibut, so many decisions, really.?

?Decisions!? thundered Victor, terrifying a bespectacled couple who sat nearby.

Gail re-filled his champagne to calm his nerves. ?Restaurants do involve decisions, but it?s not a big deal,? she said in a soothing tone. ?We always manage and most of the time, we?re fine, aren?t we??

?Important decisions,? he continued, undeterred. ?The future, that?s what this night is about.?

?Metaphorically, I guess,? Gail said as she studied the lengthy wine list. ?It?s tricky following champagne with wine, especially a good wine. You might call it a metaphor for the future, in its way.?

Victor?s voice became shrill. ?No, it?s not a metaphor. I?ve decided that you and I, the two of us, that is, should form a permanent relationship.?

Gail signaled the waiter. ?A few crab-cakes while we?re deciding about the main course, and please, sauce on the side.? She turned to Victor, ?I thought we already had a relationship, Victor. Isn?t that what we are celebrating, tonight, our relationship??

?Marriage is what I meant.? Victor took out a sheet of paper on which he had typed a list.

?Ah, you want to discuss the prospect of marriage in our future. Is that correct??

?Exactly, and I?ve prepared a statement? it?s a list of the qualities that I feel make you an outstanding candidate for marriage, in my humble view, of course.?

?A woman really doesn?t require flowers, I guess,? said Gail, heaping caviar on a slice of bread.

Victor forged ahead. ?To start, you are a high-achievement personality with a stable financial record. Not that your earnings played a role in my thinking, but earnings can?t be ignored in today?s world, and you?re well aware that they enhance your desirability. Plus, your academic tenure, well, that speaks for itself.? He chuckled at his own wit.

?As does your own, Victor,? Gail noted.

?Thank you, Gail, I appreciate the sentiment. Now, on the domestic side, some might even call you messy or sloppy or worse. But with your advanced culinary skills, I feel that you balance out the picture and on trade-off, it?s a more valued asset. In any event, we have a great house-keeper.?

?I adore Nelly,? agreed Gail, emphasizing the word adore like a patient teacher.

?You are also a highly social person with a wide network of contacts that will serve you well. Naturally, not all of your friends can be to my liking ? as why should they be?? Here, he nodded, agreeing with himself. ?Still social relationships in themselves are a positive thing, and you are well-liked.?

Gail sighed, perhaps relieved by the sight of crab-cakes or by her perceived virtues.

Victor went on. ?On the other hand, I do not enjoy your family. This has been a concern since they are not interesting people. In fact, I?d go so far as to call them boring. But it speaks well of you that you tolerate them. I give you high marks for that since I suppose you?re related to them and it?s not your fault.?

Gail said, in a false-bright tone, ?Shiraz would be a welcome change, especially if I do the salmon and you do steak. There?s a nice spicy one on the list.?

?I have more, Gail, including some comments on your physical person,? Victor said, tapping his list.

To his surprise, Gail grabbed the page and ripped it into tiny shreds, which flew in all direction, causing a commotion among the waiters.

?You need to be in therapy, Victor, long-term intensive therapy. This is the world?s most horrible proposal.? Gail sobbed.

Victor gulped. ?I guess it needed more revision.?

?First of all, men are supposed to buy jewelry for the woman? it?s called a ring. They are widely available at local retailers.?

?A ring,? he said as if considering the rings of Saturn.

?Second of all, it?s customary to begin with a declaration of love, Victor.? She dried her eyes, handed him a crab-cake, and the two ate in silence.

?I think these crab-cakes would work for the reception,? Victor said after a while. ?And you can write the wedding speeches because that?s another strength of yours, always knowing the right thing to say and the right thing to do.?

?I do?? Gail asked.
Victor nodded. ?That part about love, for example, that is really an excellent addition. Maybe you add something about happiness too.?

Gail waved to the waiter again. ?We?re ready now.?

?We are??

She smiled. ?Absolutely, Victor? yes.?

U.S. warns N.Korea satellite launch could scrap nuclear, food deals

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States warned North Korea on Friday its plan to launch a satellite with a long-range rocket could violate its February agreement on a nuclear moratorium and scuttle U.S. plans to resume food aid.

The State Department swiftly condemned Pyongyang's announcement of plans for the satellite launch next month, which it said could torpedo nascent efforts to restart broader nuclear negotiations with the secretive state.

"If they were to go forward with this launch it is very hard to imagine how we would be able to move forward with a regime whose word we have no confidence in," said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

North Korea, officially known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), said the satellite launch would mark the centenary of founder Kim Il-sung's birth next month.

Pyongyang has provided few details on the new satellite, but has said it will be a "working" satellite developed using indigenous technology.

But the United States and others said the launch plan involves ballistic missile technology explicitly banned by a U.N. resolution.

North Korea conducted a similar ballistic rocket launch in April 2009, which resulted in toughened U.N. sanctions that put further pressure on its already troubled economy and deepened its diplomatic isolation.

The North said recently it would suspend long-range missile testing as part of its talks with the United States, which are aimed at reviving six-nation aid-for-disarmament talks on North Korea's shadowy nuclear program.

A DEAL BREAKER

Nuland emphasized that any launch would abrogate a deal announced jointly by Pyongyang and Washington on February 29 under which North Korea had agreed to stop nuclear tests, uranium enrichment and long-range missile launches and to allow checks by nuclear inspectors.

"We made clear unequivocally that we considered that any satellite launch would be a deal breaker. On the front end they understood that," Nuland said.

A launch could force the United States to halt plans for food aid, which were announced alongside the nuclear deal and seen as a step to ease tensions following the December death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and the ascent of his young and untested heir, Kim Jong-un, she said.

"Were we to have a launch it would create obviously tensions and that would make the implementation of any kind of a nutritional agreement quite difficult. It would very much imperil the environment," Nuland said.

The United States had planned to deliver 240,000 tons of food aid over the next year to the impoverished country, which suffered a crippling famine in the 1990s that killed an estimated one million people.

It has since endured chronic food shortages caused in part by sanctions imposed over its nuclear and missile programs.

U.S. officials have been in touch with their counterparts in the six party negotiations - China, Japan, South Korea and Russia - to urge them to pressure Pyongyang to scrap the planned launch, Nuland said.

Discussions on returning International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors to North Korea, and on the implementation of the food deal, were on hold, she said.

"We're going to take a pause here," Nuland said. "We need more reassurance now."

A RARE HEADS-UP

U.S. officials have repeatedly said February's nuclear agreement was a "modest first step" in negotiations, and noted that North Korea has a long history of ripping up agreements and backing out of deals.

Nuland said that in this case, however, Pyongyang had warned Washington ahead of time about the planned announcement, signaling on Thursday through the "New York channel" - North Korea's mission to the United Nations - that it was moving ahead with the satellite launch.

Korea expert Scott Snyder at the Council on Foreign Relations said the North Korean advance notice was rare, and could signal an effort by Pyongyang to manage the fallout from its satellite decision.

"It is interesting that they gave a heads-up," Snyder said, although he added that it remained unclear whether Pyongyang could now reverse its satellite decision during an uncertain period of political transition.

"If you work with the old template, it would be very unlikely that they would turn the decision around," Snyder said. "This could be an interesting experiment, and a test of where things stand now in Pyongyang."

The Pentagon warned on Friday that a North Korean rocket launch would be destabilizing to the Asia-Pacific region and urged Pyongyang to reconsider its plan.

"We would consider it destabilizing behavior," Navy Captain John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman, said. "And we urge the North Korean leadership to reconsider this decision."

Walking can cut obesity gene effect in half | Health X Pert Articles ...

The millions of people whose genes make them prone to obesity aren't at the mercy of nature. How they choose to spend their free time can make a big difference in their waistline, according to new research presented today at an American Heart Association (AHA) meeting in San Diego. Watching TV for two hours each day increases the effect of certain obesity-related genes by as much as 25%, the researchers estimate. If, on the other hand, people with a strong genetic predisposition to obesity spend one hour each day walking briskly or engaging in comparable exercise, they can halve the genes' effect. "In terms of evolution, this makes sense," says Dr. Roxanne Sukol, a preventive medicine specialist at the Cleveland Clinic, who was not involved in the study. "We didn't evolve to sit still for hours a day." Health.com: 6 ways to sit less every day To explore the interaction between behavior and genes, Harvard researchers analyzed data on more than 12,000 men and women participating in two large studies of health professionals. The researchers measured the participants' genetic risk by identifying how many of the 32 known variants of the so-called obesity geneeach person had. (The gene is officially known as the fat mass and obesity associated, or FTO, gene.) Roughly half of the general population has some genetic risk for obesity, says lead author Qibin Qi, Ph.D., a research fellow in nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston. At the same time, Qi and his colleagues looked at how many hours per week each of the participants spent in front of the TV, as well as how much time they devoted to physical activity. Two years into the study, the researchers also recorded the participants' body mass index (BMI), a ratio of height to weight used to measure body fat. Health.com: The worst habits for your heart Each additional obesity-related gene variant was associated with a 0.13-unit increase in BMI, the researchers found. To put it another way, the average person with 7 to 8 variants can expect to have a BMI roughly one unit higher than it would be without the variants. (One BMI unit is equivalent to about six pounds on a 5-foot, 6-inch woman.) The influence of the gene variants, however, appeared to be strongest in people who watched the most TV. The variants' effect on BMI was about four times greater in people who spent 40 hours or more per week in front of the TV than it was in those who watched an hour per week or less. "Prolonged TV watching exacerbates the effect of the gene," Qi says. By the same token, weakening the genes' effect was as simple as switching off the television and going for a brisk walk. The average difference in BMI between a person with the highest genetic obesity risk and a person of identical height with the lowest risk would be cut in half if the high-risk person were to walk for an hour each day, Qi and his colleagues estimate. Health.com: Walk a little, lose a lot The main problem with TV watching is that it tends to involve so much sitting, Qi says. As long as they keep moving while they watch, people don't necessarily need to miss their favorite shows. "Rather than just sitting there, I have a better idea: When they watch, they should exercise," he says. "There's nothing wrong with TV per se, but TV watching may be indicative of a sedentary lifestyle." Sukol often recommends pedometers to patients who are trying to be more active. The devices enable patients to track their progress by measuring the number of steps they take each day, and they also motivate people to keep walking. "Human beings are designed to move," Sukol says. "If we're not moving, we put ourselves at risk." Qi and his colleagues presented their findings today at the AHA's annual meeting on nutrition, physical activity, and metabolism. Unlike the research published in medical journals, the study has not been thoroughly reviewed by other experts in the field. Brittney Griner and Baylor have been gearing up all season long to make a run at a national championship.

They've blown through their first 34 opponents en route to a perfect season so far. Now the top-seeded Lady Bears are six victories from becoming the seventh team to go unbeaten and win the school's second national championship.

Anything short of an NCAA women's basketball title would be considered a major disappointment.

"This is what we've talked about all year, these six basketball games," Mulkey said. "Everybody's healthy today and you're headed in with a focus like none other than I've seen in a while. It's reflected in how we're playing right now, and we just want to continue it."

Standing in the way could be the other No. 1 seeds ? Stanford, Connecticut and Notre Dame, dominant all season long. The Huskies and Irish both lost competitive games at Baylor this season.

Griner and Baylor, who lost in the regional final last season, could be the first team ever to win 40 games in a year, but coach Kim Mulkey only cares about one thing ? a second national title for the school.

"We started hearing about that, and it's never been a goal of ours," Mulkey said of winning 40 games. "Our simple goal is to win a national championship."

The basketball madness gets started Saturday ? the first step en route to the Final Four, which begins April 1 in Denver. Baylor will open up against UC Santa Barbara.

To get to their second Final Four in three seasons, the Lady Bears might have to get through Tennessee, which is appearing in its 31st straight NCAA tournament.

"I wish I was not in the same bracket as Pat (Summitt), because of the respect I have and also because we've already played," Mulkey said.

The two teams met in November, and Tennessee held an eight-point lead early in the second half before Griner took over en route to a nine-point victory.

The 6-foot-8 center has been dominant lately scoring more than 40 points twice in the past 10 games, including a 45-point effort in the Big 12 tournament semifinals this past weekend.

The Lady Vols have won eight national championships, but haven't been to the Final Four in three seasons. They pledged at the beginning of the season that they would not go a fourth consecutive year without reaching the Final Four ? something they've never done ? and would try to win a national title to honor Pat Summitt. The coach announced in August she'd been diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type.

Summitt's squad will face her alma mater ? Tennessee Martin ? in the opener.

"I like my alma mater," Summitt said. "I like winning and moving on better."

Before a potential matchup with Baylor, Tennessee could meet Delaware and the nation's leading scorer Elena Delle Donne. The 6-5 star is averaging 27.5 points this season and has guided the Blue Hens to a 30-1 mark.

Now they are looking for their first NCAA tournament victory.

Connecticut hopes to win its eighth national championship (tying Tennessee) and will start with a matchup against Prairie View.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma told the Huskies' faithful in the preseason that this team wouldn't win a national championship. But his young team has developed over the past five months, and Connecticut looks poised to make another run after beating Notre Dame for the Big East tournament title.

"If you have to rely just on momentum then you don't have a good enough team," Auriemma said. "We've got to hope we have a good enough team and then rely on momentum as an extra asset."

The Irish also have been focused on winning a title after falling just short last season, losing in the championship game to Texas A&M, which is a No. 3 seed in the Raleigh region. The two teams could meet in the regional final.

Notre Dame, which will open up at home against Liberty, reached the national title game last year by knocking off UConn in the Final Four. It was the fourth straight season that UConn made the Final Four. The two teams, who already have played three times this year, could meet for a fourth time in Denver.

The Cardinal also have advanced four straight seasons to the Final Four, and coach Tara VanDerveer is looking to get her first title in 20 years. She'll begin with a trip East to Norfolk, Va., to face Hampton. Stanford, which has won 28 straight games since its lone loss of the season to Connecticut, hasn't been east of the Rockies since 2001, when it went to Oklahoma.

"Well last year at this time I don't think anyone thought Texas A&M was going to win either," VanDerveer said. "Baylor has had a great year. I think that Brittney Griner is a great player, she's a tremendous talent. We know that every team is beatable. I hope we have a chance to play them. We want to go as far as we can. If that means playing Baylor, we'll be ready."

Standing in the way of a fifth trip to the Final Four could be second-seed Duke, which lost in the ACC tournament quarterfinals. The Blue Devils are led by talented freshman post Elizabeth Williams and sophomore guard Chelsea Grey and will face Samford in the opening round.

Another intriguing team in that region is third-seeded St. John's, which ended UConn's 99-game home-court winning streak in February. The Red Storm have won 14 of their last 17 games, falling to the Huskies in the semifinals of the Big East tournament. Third-seeded St. John's faces Creighton in its opener.

Missing from the tournament is North Carolina, which is hosting the first two rounds, but didn't make the field for the first time since 2001.

While the Tar Heels will be missing, three schools ? Albany, St. Bonaventure and Florida Gulf Coast ? are making their first appearance, and the Big Ten has a conference record seven teams.

The Bonnies and Eagles will be meeting in the first round.
