In college, although majority of my peers and friends were negligent about their health, there were also many who did care of their health and bodies. They used to try to include exercise into their daily routines and tried to eat healthy. I met this one girl who was then studying to be a nutritionist. I met her in my junior year and I was pleasantly surprised by how much she cared about her health and how she restrained herself from following the usually unhealthy college diet that most students do. She always ate salads in the dinning hall and fruit for snacks. However, she used to go to parties and consume empty calories in the form of alcohol. Because she was a little scared about putting on weight, she would just munch on carrots all of next day. Anyway, all in all she did follow a healthy lifestyle. She also helped me stay focused on my health and even I started eating salads in the university dining hall. When we would go out to eat at a restaurant, we would order huge salads and feel very happy for eating healthy and less calories.
After I started to eating salads, I immediately noticed that the salads I ordered at restaurants and fast food places were very tasty compared to the ones I used to eat in the dinning hall. I stared researching and found out the ugly truth.
Apparently the healthy salads we order in restaurants aren?t healthy at all because of the condiments and dressing in them. I recently checked out a nutritional fact sheet for a restaurant and was baffled to see that a medium sized salad had almost 900 calories in it. I didn?t even want to think about how many calories I used to actually eat at a restaurant in one meal because I used order a huge salad, a sweat drink and a meat dish (that must be a lot of calories!!!). The problem is that more than unnecessary calories, the unhealthy dressings and seasonings can contain toxic processed chemicals that can cause a lot of health problems. Calories and toxins in one meal is not a good sign.
Anyway, here a few tips that you can follow to keep your meal simple and healthy when you go out to eat.
1. If you are ordering a salad, you can ask for no salad dressings and other breaded items they put on it like croutons etc.
2. Now, when I order stake or other meat dish, I make sure to ask how it is prepared. Many people hesitate to ask the waiters about their dishes fearing that they will come off as demanding customers. In reality, it is the waiter?s job to know how a dish is made and as a paying customer, you have the right to know how the food you are going to eat is made. So, be sure to politely ask about your order. Usually many dishes come with French fries and other unhealthy oil side dishes. You can skip them and order steamed vegetables instead. Also, you can ask them to use less oil while they make and not to put butter or other fattening sauces/ seasonings on your meat.
3. Another great tip is to sip water instead of ordering sodas (diet sodas aren?t any better) and other sweetened drinks like fruit juices.
Be careful about ordering ?healthy dishes? because they may not be all that healthy. If you are going out to a restaurant, tweak your order and try to reduce as many unnecessary calories from fat and carbs as you can and enjoy your tasty meal.
